Dear Parents and Families,

It’s very hard to choose the highlight or highlights to share with you each week… so many precious moments each day! One such moment was being able to listen to a couple charming young ladies sing their song about celebrating Kwanza and another was the school-wide joy the good, sticky snowman snow brought ~ there were just about as many snow-people in the school yard as there were children by the end of the week!

Notes and Reminders

Please see the attached note about a dental sealant service being provided right here at Cornerstone. Today the children in Elementary were visited by a representative from the program to talk about oral hygiene and they all received some new items to care for their teeth as I am sure you’ve seen by now. By returning the attached form either opting yes or no to the program, your child will receive a backpack with several more items for their use as an incentive. Please let me know if you have any questions. Participation is entirely optional and it will happen right here on site. Click here for the dental sealant information.

Circle of Security Parenting  (for parents of children 5 and younger)

At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you! The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.

Circle of Security helps parents to:

  • Learn to recognize children’s needs and better understand their behavior.
  • Develop an understanding of how our responses can meet children’s needs.
  • Be supported as a parent with ideas on how to make parenting easier.
  • Strengthen our relationships with our children for healthier, happier and more secure children.

We will be offering a Circle of Security Parenting series here at Cornerstone beginning in January!  Circle of Security is a facilitated conversation amongst a small group of parents.  It meets once a week for 8 weeks.  Registration will be limited to 12 parents.   Facilitators are Terri Strom, our school social worker, and Rebecca Marshall, a parent of 3 children at Cornerstone, both of whom are Certified Circle of Security Parenting Facilitators.

Tuesdays, January 23rd to March 13th, 5:30-7:00pm.  Dinner and child care provided.  Assistance for transportation provided upon request.

If you are interested in registering for this opportunity or would like more information, contact Terri Strom, Community Social Worker at  or 651.216.8779.

MN Cavity Free Program for Parents

We have the opportunity for dental professionals from MN Cavity Free Program at Community Dental Care to come and share with parents preventative oral health practices and connections to free dental services for young children. If this is of interest to you and a parent event you would attend, please contact Terri or Liesl.  We are looking at offering this in late January, early February when our elementary students are participating in the Community Dental Sealant event, but need to have parent interest to schedule.

One more reminder about the weather

Brrrr!!! If you need any support with winter gear for your children, please let me know. We want to make sure every child has all five of the pieces of gear: warm hat, warm mittens, coat, snow pants, and boots. Our temperature guidelines are:

  • If it is below 10 degrees including wind chill, Toddlers will stay in
  • If it is below 0 degrees including wind chill, Children’s Houses will stay in
  • If it is below -10 degrees including wind chill, Elementary will stay in

Thank you for helping everyone get bundled up so they can enjoy their many adventures outside!

Head of School Search

Focus Group Schedule

As you know, we will be hosting focus group discussions with various groups for input regarding the Head of School Search. Please save one of these dates so you are able to participate in a parent focus group! Childcare will be provided for both sessions.

  • January 19, 2018 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
  • January 22, 2018 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

From Our Parents

Please help Cornerstone Montessori Elementary School raise money for “Going Outs”. These are field trips that are focused on research or an area of interest, or are related to the care of the environment or pets. These cards are reproductions of children’s actual work. They are 4 ¼ x 5 ½ [A2] in size and include envelopes. The inside of all cards are blank. Please include payment at the time of ordering. Click here for a copy of the order form.

We have made about $450 so far and will be printing more cards next week. Please place your orders if you would still like to help support our “Going out” program!!  Also, special thanks to those who help fold/package and to Dan Keefe and Chris Bewell for formatting the cards!  It takes a team!

Box Tops

Cornerstone collects Box Tops for Education! Box Tops for Education will be submitted in the spring. Please bring in any that you have collected. A box is located by Adam's desk.
