Dear Parents and Families,

I wrote a brief new article about Freedom and Responsibility in a Montessori classroom and you can read it by following this link:

It was nice timing to see this article, then, from the “Google Guys”, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Founders of Google and Montessori children, they have some interesting research to share about the kind of schooling that prepares people to be successful in the workplace!

Notes and Reminders

  • No school Friday, February 16 (staff professional development day)
  • No school Monday, February 19 (President’s Day Holiday)
  • No school Friday, March 2 (Conference Prep. Day)

Friendly reminder that we do not hand out valentines and candy at Cornerstone. We do celebrate and embrace a caring community and each classroom comes up with how they would like to do that. Often the children enjoy making you something to express their love and we embrace and support that as well. Thank you for following this expectation.

Upcoming Conferences

Reminder that Spring Conferences are fast approaching! Conferences run the week of March 5-9, with no school on March 8 and 9 for all day conferences. Conference sign up information will be sent to you on February 23 and at that time you will be able to schedule conference times.

Possible St. Paul School Strike

Some of you may have heard that the St. Paul School Teachers voted to authorize a strike. Please know that because we are our own district, this will not affect the regular running of our program at Cornerstone. You can see more details by following this link:

If the strike happens, however, It will affect Boys and Girls Club hours. Boys and Girls Club would close early, by 5:30 or 6:00, Mr. Jones said when he came to meet with me this week.

Car Seats

Oh, do I remember those days of juggling car seats! Before you know it those days will be over and it will be almost too easy to hop in the car, buckle up, and run errands. For now, while your children are young and in light of all of the especially hard and dangerous driving in our Minnesota winters, we wanted to take the chance to share car seat law and guidelines with you. Please click here to view a flyer from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety on Child Safety Seat Guidelines!

Do you have car seats or boosters that your children have outgrown? If so, please consider donating them to Cornerstone to share. If you are in need of a car seat or a booster, please let me know and we will work to make sure you have what you need.

Thank you, everyone, for your support in helping our little people travel safely!

From our Parents

We have had some fun opportunities for parents these last couple of weeks, building standing desks with students, coloring for our reading specialist, grooming the front yard so it’s not so icy (!!) and some deep, deep cleaning of the laundry room (maybe that wasn’t quite as much fun). Thanks to all the parents who have been helping out at the school. I know the staff really appreciate it.

Last fall during conferences we organized food for staff during the two days. It was a big success and teachers and staff really appreciated it. So we are going to do it again, Conferences are March 8th and 9th so Kaci Nowicki is going to send out a sign-up link over the weekend. If you have any questions you can email her at

Thanks everyone, we already have our sights set on the end of year picnic, June 7th! If you have any ideas or want to help plan email

 See you soon!
