Dear Families,

I had the pleasure of observing in the environments this week.  It was so lovely to see children deeply engaged this early in the year!

I want to share a story from Megan Reimer, our Literacy Specialist:

I took a group of four boys from upper elementary to the library yesterday afternoon. We had a wonderful time. At one point, 6th year asked me, "How much time do we have left?" I said, "About a half an hour." He replied, "YES!!!! This is better than the electronics store!" I, of course, teared up immediately and said that was the best thing I have heard all day.

This same boy later advocated for himself by asking a librarian for an application for a library card and asking me to bring it back to the library.  This boy had told me he didn't like reading a couple of years ago. He is now on his way to becoming a lifelong reader.

This is such a lovely example of the ways in which children at Cornerstone engage in the world around them and to be fierce advocates for themselves and their learning.

A few reminders for you as we end our second week together:

Our first Parent Partnership event will be 5:30-7:00 on September 24.  For those who are interested, a "State of the School” meeting will take place immediately prior, at 5:00pm, to share results of the MCA assessments and discuss plans for the year.  The Parent Partnership event will begin with dinner in the MCM cafe/lecture room, before the adults join the guides in the environments.  The State of the School meeting will take place in the multi-purpose room.  Childcare and dinner will be provided.  Please RSVP to by September 20 so that we can make appropriate arrangements.

In addition, flu shots will be available at the event for all children regardless of insurance status and for parents with insurance or a $36 fee.  Please complete the attached form and bring it with you on September 24 if you would like to participate.  Copies are also available at the front desk.

As part of the MCM primary training course, Cornerstone is happy to welcome an intern.  Taneishia Crawford is a Cornerstone parent and will be supporting the Cornerstone Montessori School (early childhood) programs in the mornings this year.

For those of you with children in the elementary program, MCA results were mailed out this week.  You should receive your child’s scores shortly.

Enjoy your weekend!
